PxE's technology treats light as waves rather than rays. It captures the light's wavefront, meaning its wavelength and curvature, to produce a passive "white-light hologram" without lasers. In this approach, wavefront distortion is used for deblurring, curvature encodes depth, and wavelength encodes color and near-infrared. The stack has two parts. The PxE HoloCoder is a transparent, static, diffractive optical element placed over a standard CMOS sensor in place of the conventional Bayer color filter. The Holographic ISP is a deterministic, real-time decoding algorithm that reconstructs the data from the sensor back out to the scene and outputs fused RGB-IR-Depth images. Because the HoloCoder does not use absorbing color filters, the company says the camera passes nearly all available light, compared with about 25% in a conventional 2D camera. It reports up to about 4x light sensitivity and 2x the signal-to-noise ratio of Bayer-based cameras, in a compact single-lens, single-sensor, single-chip form factor that fits existing CMOS manufacturing. The company's patents describe a periodic encoder with an array of sensor cells downstream that measures the mutual coherence function of incoming light, recovering phase and coherence information for depth sensing, aberration correction, and lensless imaging. A later filing covers a flat holographic camera design that pairs an encoder mask with a lens array.
