BioBetter's protein manufacturing platform uses tobacco plants (Nicotiana tabacum) as animal-free bioreactors, an approach known as molecular farming. The company identifies and optimizes a target protein, clones its gene into proprietary expression vectors and introduces it into the plant. The plants are grown in greenhouses or open fields, and their cells express and store the protein until harvest. A proprietary extraction and purification process then recovers the protein at high purity while removing plant proteins and nicotine. The company also has a protein-engineering approach that links growth factors to cellulose particles through a cellulose-binding domain, which makes them more stable under harsh conditions. Its pilot facility has processed up to 100 kg of plant material per day. ExoFera extracts are verified for the presence of plant exosomes and growth factors.
