The EIC Transition funding programme is aimed at supporting innovative, ground-breaking technologies after the initial research, at the transition phase from the lab to a relevant environment. In this programme, you can get support to promote promising technologies from proof of concept up to validation in a controlled environment. The EIC Transition is exclusively available to promote previously EU-funded results, focusing on high-risk and high-gain, technology maturation projects looking to take steps toward commercialisation and marketing. The EIC Transition is open for all types of technology with one deadline every year.
EIC Transition
The EIC Transition is an open call for any type of technology that meets all the following:
- Building upon a result of a previously funded EU project with commercialisation potential promoting innovation and new business
- Mature technology already achieved a proof of concept with foreseeable applications
- Preliminary market research shows the existence of a relevant market and competitors identified and explored
- A well-established team with diverse expertise: technology, market, IP, business people
Who can apply?
The EIC Transition is exclusively open to applicants taking a result of a previously funded EU project and advancing it. The eligible list of preliminary projects is:
- EIC Pathfinder projects, FET Open projects
- ERC Proof of Concept projects
- Research and Innovation Actions (RIA) projects from Horizon Europe Pillar 2 or Horizon 2020 Societal Challenges
- EDF projects
Additionally, the preliminary projects must:
- Have a grant start date of more than 12 months before the EIC Transition deadline
- Have a grant end date of less than 30 months before the EIC Transition deadline
Applicants may submit a proposal based on a previous project in which they didn’t participate. To do so, they must provide a confirmation letter from the relevant owners of the results, allowing it to be the basis of their EIC Transition proposal.
The application may be done in three different formations:
- A mono-beneficiary project with 1 legal entity
- A small consortium of 2 legal entities established in 2 different eligible countries (Horizon Europe participating countries)
- A consortium of 3-5 legal entities established in at least 3 different eligible countries (Horizon Europe participating countries), at least one member of the consortium must come from an EU member state
Funding
- Up to EUR 2.5 million (or more if properly justified) to validate and demonstrate technology in a relevant environment (from TRL 3-4 to TRL 5-6)
- The funding rate of this grant will be 100% of the eligible costs + 25% overhead
Additionally, funded projects are eligible to:
- Receive EIC booster grants with fixed amounts of up to EUR 50,000 to undertake complementary activities to explore potential pathways to commercialisation
- Submit an EIC Accelerator proposal via the Fast-Track scheme
Submission
For 2024 there will be one submission deadline: 18 September 2024 at 17 Brussels time.
For 2025 there will be one submission deadline: 17 September 2025 at 17 Brussels time.
Proposals are limited to 20 pages and must follow the provided template.
Evaluation Process
- Your proposal will be first evaluated and scored remotely by 3 EIC expert evaluators, each giving it a grade of up to 5 on the three evaluation criteria: Excellence, Impact, and Implementation
- The evaluators will convene as an evaluation committee that decides on the final score, taking into consideration the evaluators’ comments.
- The first part of the evaluation process is expected to take 9 weeks after the deadline.
- Those who submit the best proposals will be invited to an online interview in front of an EU jury. The applicants will submit a short pitch presentation and up to 5 representatives of the project will present it and answer questions about it.
- The second part of the evaluation process is expected to take place 3-5 weeks following the first stage results, with the results published 2-4 weeks after the interview.
