There are five different Horizon Europe missions proposed across five mission-areas.
A mission is a set of actions across multiple disciplines that have the aim of reaching a bold and inspirational goal with a significant societal impact within a specified timeframe.
As part of its commitment to addressing some of the world’s biggest challenges, Horizon Europe has identified five mission areas, designed to advance the objectives of the European Green Deal, Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan and Sustainable Development Goals.
Under the Cancer mission area, the proposed mission is called “Conquering Cancer: Mission Possible”.
Objectives
Cancer affects everyone regardless of age, gender or social status and represents a tremendous burden on patients, families and societies at large.
According to the European Cancer Information System, each year 2.7 million people are diagnosed with cancer in Europe and 1.3 million lose their lives to this disease. If no further action is taken, the number of newly-diagnosed people will increase to more than 3.24 million by 2040.
The EU’s Mission on Cancer aims to improve the well-being of over 3 million people by 2030, focusing on prevention, treatment and improving the lives of cancer patients and their families. Key objectives include: understanding the disease, preventing avoidable cases, optimizing diagnostic and treatment methods, promoting quality of life and ensuring fair access to care for everyone.
The mission’s objectives include:
- Understanding cancer
- Prevention and early detection
- Diagnosis and treatment
- Quality of life for patients and & their families
