Starstone's chemo-enzymatic platform uses engineered bacteria to make an enzyme (carbonic anhydrase) that converts CO₂ and calcium ions directly into a defined mineral phase. This gives control over crystal structure, particle size and reactivity. The process runs at 35 °C in modular reactors rather than a 1,400 °C kiln, and uses CO₂ and industrial side streams as inputs. A 1,000 L industrial pilot line (20 kg/day at start-up, ramping to 100 kg/day) is being commissioned. Certification work with VDZ toward EN 197-1 is under way, with a parallel ASTM C1157 route in the US.
