The CRPA technology uses the patient's own respiratory effort as a cardiac assist mechanism. The system modulates the cardiac rhythm so that more heartbeats occur during intervals of high pleural pressure than during intervals of low (negative) pleural pressure. The size of this modulation is set by the severity of the respiratory effort and the degree of lung congestion. By timing heartbeats to the respiratory cycle, the therapy aims to move fluid from the lungs, lower pulmonary artery pressure, raise cardiac output and reduce cardiac workload. The device combines diagnosis and therapy in one autonomic system that adapts treatment to the patient's current condition. The approach was tested in a feasibility study in sheep before the first-in-human study.
