MercyBeam’s technology is a unique method to focus x-rays by exploiting known physics of X-ray/matter interaction. This technology allows utilizing commonly used and inexpensive low-energy X-ray tube sources (the same as used for standard x-ray imaging) for replacing the massive and expensive linear-accelerator-based (LINAC) high-energy x-ray sources. These LINAC sources also require massively shielded “vaults” to contain the highly-penetrating emitted radiation. Instead, the company uses conventional low-energy X-ray tube sources, combined with our proprietary focusing lens array, which provides better ability to direct the lesion-treating radiation precisely where it is needed, while better reducing irradiation to the surrounding healthy tissue.
